The Trading Drill That Never Stops

The response to our first professional trading drill has been incredible. Hundreds of traders have reached out sharing their insights from “The Lose Drill” – and many are asking what comes next.

Today, I’m sharing one of the most powerful exercises used in prop firm training programs. It’s called the “Always in the Market” drill, and it’s designed to change how you read market flow in real-time.

Trading Exercise #2 – Always in the Market (Cut and Reverse)

For a detailed walkthrough of implementing this drill effectively, watch our video:

This is one of the classic exercises used in professional trading education. Your goal is simple: maintain a position in the market for the entire trading session, reversing your direction whenever you believe the market flow is changing.

You’re never flat. You’re always long or short. When you think the market is about to move against your current position, you don’t just exit – you reverse completely.

This is about developing the trader’s equivalent of muscle memory for reading real-time market dynamics.

BONUS: Take a look into the decision making process of professional traders with this video training series that helps you make smarter trading decisions.

Detailed Drill Instructions

This drill works for all trading styles, but focuses on developing short-term market reading skills. Here’s how to progress through the exercise:

Session Structure:

  • Start with 1-2 hour sessions on SIM only
  • Begin with a directional bias (long or short) based on your market read
  • When you sense the flow changing, immediately reverse your entire position
  • Stay in the market for the entire session duration

How to Progress:

  1. Start Simple: Begin by focusing on obvious flow changes – clear momentum shifts that even newer traders can spot. Don’t overthink the reversals.
  2. Develop Your Flow Reading: As you get comfortable, start looking for subtler signs of flow change – order flow imbalances, volume shifts, pace changes.
  3. Work on Execution Speed: Focus on making your reversal decisions quickly. Hesitation kills in this drill.
  4. Vary Your Timeframes: Some sessions focus on micro-swings (minutes), others on riding larger moves (30+ minutes).
  5. Track Decision Quality: Keep notes on why you reversed and whether those reasons proved valid.

The key insight comes from forcing yourself to have an opinion at all times. You can’t sit passively, you must constantly evaluate whether your current position aligns with market flow.

What This Drill Teaches You

This exercise gives you multiple benefits that translate directly to better trading:

  1. Forces You to Stay Aligned: You develop an instinct for staying on the right side of momentum instead of fighting it.
  2. Improves Your Speed: Making rapid flip decisions sharpens your reaction time and decisiveness.
  3. Builds Emotional Control: Constant position changes teach you to stay calm, no matter what the market throws at you.
  4. Exposes Your Bad Habits: You’ll quickly spot things like hesitation, overthinking, or constantly second-guessing yourself.
  5. Keeps You Engaged: Staying active for entire sessions keeps your mind locked on real-time flow.
  6. Develops Market Sense: You learn to see beyond individual trades and focus on market cycles and momentum shifts.
  7. Accelerates Learning: The sheer number of decisions you make speeds up your development.
  8. Stops Overthinking: No time to chase the perfect entry – you act on what’s happening right now.
  9. Builds Confidence: Making decisive moves based on your read builds genuine trader instinct.
  10. Improves Tape Reading: You’ll start seeing what actually matters in real-time price and volume action.

How To Actually Do This Drill

To get the most out of this exercise:

  • SIM accounts only – This is training, not live trading
  • Ignore P&L completely – Focus on whether your decisions made sense, not profit/loss
  • Track decision quality – Did your flip reasoning prove correct?
  • Pick your pace – Some days micro-swings, others longer holds
  • Expect to be wrong a lot – That’s how you learn
  • Quit when it stops helping – Move on once you stop improving
  • Accept rough days – Some days the market will be tough to read

What Most Traders Discover

Here’s what typically happens when traders first attempt this drill:

Week 1-2: Overwhelming. You’ll reverse constantly, often at the worst possible moments. This is normal.

Week 3-4: You start recognizing obvious flow changes and your reversals become more selective.

Week 5-6: You develop intuition for market pace and begin anticipating flow changes before they’re obvious.

Week 7+: The skills transfer to your regular trading – you naturally stay aligned with market momentum.

The breakthrough moment usually comes when you realize that most “obvious” signals are actually counterintuitive. What looks like a clear reversal to the untrained eye often represents continuation to the experienced flow reader.

What Comes Next?

This is the second in our series of professional trading drills. Each exercise builds specific skills that stack on top of each other.

The traders who actually complete these drills develop an edge that’s impossible to get through traditional chart analysis alone. They learn to read the market’s language fluently, not just guess at what it might do next.

Next time, I’ll share another prop firm exercise that takes these flow-reading skills even deeper.

Please remember, this isn’t theory… This is how professionals develop their edge. It might feel chaotic at first, but that’s exactly why it works so well.
