The Institutional Trading Day

Have you ever wondered how Institutional Traders organize their day? After all, many people consider Institutional Traders to be “the opposition”, whilst others claim to be following in their footsteps.

Yet what does the average Joe at home know about Institutional Trading other than a few presumptions and the presumptions of others repeated on Internet forums? Not much, really.

Gary Norden knows, after all he was the youngest ever trader at one of Japans largest Securities Firms, he was Head of Liffe Options for Natwest Markets at 23 and spent many years trading both his own Capital both on the LIFFE floor and later on in screen based trading. Gary now consults to Investment Banks and Hedge Funds around the world.

Gary recently recorded a webinar in which he lays out the Institutional Trading Day, detailing:

  • What are the different positions on a trading desk? How do they structure their day?
  • How orders are received into a bank desk/placed by funds – time of day these occur and why.
  • How does this fit with how retail traders operate? What lessons can they learn?
  • How and why context is applied to these orders and how does this fit with retail traders’ methods?
  • What happens at the close of trade? Who trades and why? How does this fit with retail traders’ views?

This insight will help you to decide which prices are really important as well as how the closing price is often manipulated. It’ll give you an clearer idea of whether these institutions are your competition or not.

The recording is on the Futures.IO forum – it’s free for all and you can watch it if you click here.
